Overview

An online workshop with 55 participants from 34 countries was held in conjunction with the 13th Annual Global Conference on Population and the Generational Economy. The discussion focused on key population and development issues that could be uniquely addressed using national transfer accounts (NTA) estimates and methods. Follow-up workshops will be held on preparation of national “Reports on the Generational Economy” to examine the economic and fiscal implications of population change using data from national transfer accounts.

Overview

The United Nations Commission on Population and Development (CPD) was to address the special theme “Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development” at its fifty-third session in 2020. In preparation for the session, the Population Division prepared the report of the Secretary-General on population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development, which was issued in February 20201. Due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the Commission was not able to hold its formal session at the end of March 2020. The Commission decided to postpone a full consideration of the theme to its fifty-fourth session in 2021.

The report prepared for the 2020 session focused on four broad themes:

Concepts, measures and state of food security and nutrition
Nutrition, food security and population health, including diets, nutritional habits and burden of disease; hunger and undernutrition; and overweight and obesity
Population growth, food consumption and sustainability
Rural development, population movements and settlement patterns.

To inform preparation of an updated report of the Secretary-General for the 2021 session, the Population Division of UN DESA will convene an expert group meeting on the theme, to be held virtually from 28 to 30 October 2020. The expert group should advise on 1) elements where new data or analysis has become available in 2020; 2) elements that should receive greater attention in the new report; and 3) evidence for impacts of COVID-19 in each area.

INTRODUCTION, NEW EVIDENCE AND COVID-19 IMPACTS The 54th session of the Commission on Population and Development (19-23 April 2021) will consider the special theme “Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development”. The first day of the expert group meeting will provide an introduction to the Commission’s deliberations on the theme; highlight new data on food security, nutrition and health; and review the impacts of COVID-19 on various aspects of food security and nutrition.

Overview

The purpose of the meeting is to assess the coverage and accuracy and consistency of the data and estimates related to early adolescent fertility and to review the scope of associated demographic factors to assess the accuracy of early adolescent fertility data and estimates. The invited experts from United Nations system entities, research institutions and data producers will also review and discuss approaches for early adolescent fertility data validation, estimation and selection for SDG reporting and analysis. This online meeting of two half-day sessions on 26-27 October 2020 is organized as panel discussions around selected themes addressing data sources, methods to estimate early adolescent fertility data and approaches for data validation and selection for SDG reporting and analysis.

International Forum on Migration Statistics 2020

Overview

The International Forum on Migration Statistics (IFMS) is a unique global platform devoted to improving data on migration in all its dimensions. The first meeting of the IFMS, organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) in Paris, France, from 15 to 16 January 2018, featured 240 speakers and over 350 participants from 90 countries, representing national statistical offices, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and academia.

Improving data is crucial for the implementation of the migration-related dimensions of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR). The IFMS offers a unique space for global dialogue, information-sharing and networking for a broad range of actors from national and regional authorities, NGOs, international agencies and the private sector, with the aim of building and strengthening migration data capacities around the world. With the public discourse on migration increasingly being influenced by myths and misperceptions, the IFMS contributes to more informed and evidence-based public discourse and policy making.

The Forum is expected to foster an informal global migration data network, aimed at promoting exchanges of information between a broad range of stakeholders. This could include online mechanisms to facilitate the sharing of innovative data practices.

The second edition of the IFMS will be hosted by the African Union (AU) and the Egyptian Government, which currently chairs the AU, from 20-21 January 2020 in Cairo, Egypt. The Forum will be supported by a Programme Committee of scientific experts, drawn from all major regions in the world, as well as a local organising committee to help with logistics.

Like the IFMS in 2018, IFMS 2020 will provide a place for sharing innovative approaches to filling data gaps in the measurement of migration and migration-related topics, such as local integration and development impacts. Given that migrants often face limited access to healthcare, education, justice, labour protections and other services, the IFMS 2020 will specifically address disaggregation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets by migratory status (SDG 17.16).

The 2020 Forum will focus on six themes:

Strengthening data for policy
Capacity development and financing
Data collection and innovation
Measuring progress on the SDGs and other global commitments
Cooperation and data governance
Improving availability of data on migrants in vulnerable situations

Second Committee of the General Assembly: International migration and development

The present report was prepared in response to General Assembly resolution 73/241. Section II presents the latest global levels and trends in international migration. Section III discusses recent activities, undertaken by entities of the United Nations system, to support countries in integrating migration considerations into national development plans. Section IV reports on progress in measuring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets related to migration. Section V presents the current status of ratification of the main international instruments related to international migration. Section VI provides a brief overview of efforts by the international community to convene an international conference on international migration, which culminated in the Intergovernmental Conference to Adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, held in Marrakech on 10 and 11 December 2018. The report also briefly presents other recent activities of the General Assembly in the realm of international migration and development. Key findings and recommendations are presented in Section VII.

Overview

World Population Prospects (WPP), the United Nations population estimates and projections prepared by DESA’s Population Division since 1951, form a comprehensive set of demographic data to assess population trends at the global, regional and national levels. Widely considered to be the world’s most authoritative dataset on population levels, trends and characteristics, WPP is used for calculating one-third of the indicators used to track progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Starting in 2021, WPP will estimate and project the population by single age for each year (“1x1”), replacing the current “5x5” approach.

In order to achieve this objective, the Population Division is organizing an online expert group meeting on “Methods for the World Population Prospects 2021 and beyond” from 6 and 8 April 2020. The purpose of the meeting is to bring together experts to discuss and share experiences in the use of methods to develop robust annual time series of various demographic indicators (child, adult and old-age mortality, fertility, migration), incorporate uncertainty in population estimates, produce models to derive mortality and fertility age patterns, and reconcile the various demographic components of change to reconstruct coherent populations by age, period and cohort from 1950 to 2020.
