Overview

The United Nations Population Division organized a technical mission to improve the capacity of the staff of the Institut de Statistiques et d'Etudes économiquees du Burundi (ISTEEBU) in the production and use of population estimates and projections for evidence-based policy making for sustainable development.

Overview

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the Organization for International Migration (IOM) have been collaborating in the development of the methodology and measurement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicator 10.7.2 on well-managed migration policies, to inform the global evaluation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

The goal of the workshop is to analyse and discuss with national representatives and experts about the methodology for measuring SDG target 10.7.2, Number of countries that have implemented well-managed migration policies.

Overview

International migration is a global phenomenon that is growing in scope, complexity and impact. Today, virtually all countries in the world are simultaneously countries of destination, origin and transit for international migrants. Traditional migration patterns are complemented by new migratory flows, fuelled by changing economic, demographic, political and social realities. Changing migration patterns affect the size and composition of migrant populations as well as host and origin economies and societies. The rise in global mobility, the growing complexity of migratory patterns and the impact of population movements have contributed to international migration becoming a priority for the international community.

The 15th Coordination Meeting on International Migration will take stock of progress made in implementing the migration-related commitments of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (A/RES/70/1). The meeting wil also contribute to the implementation of the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants (A/RES/71/1) by reviewing the substantive preparations for the 2018 intergovernmental conference on international migration, with a particular focus on the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration (A/RES/71/1, Annex II).

Overview

Urbanization and migration are profoundly important demographic phenomena affecting population growth and decline, and the spatial distribution of populations both between and within countries. The two processes have significant development impacts at the global, regional, national and subnational levels, and they are closely interconnected. Cities are centres of demographic, social, economic and political change, attracting migrants from near and far.

Recognizing the importance of these topics, the Commission on Population and Development decided that the thematic focus of its fifty-first session in April 2018 will be on “Sustainable cities, human mobility and international migration”. The Population Division is organizing an expert group meeting on this topic, to be held in New York from 7 to 8 September 2017 (UN Headquarters, 7 September – CR12 and 8 September – CR1).

The meeting will examine (a) new evidence regarding trends in urbanization and migration, (b) analyses of their development impacts, and (c) implications for policy, governance and planning. The focus of the discussion will range from the global to the local level, with the goal of identifying substantive connections across geographic and organizational levels, and encouraging coordinated policy responses based on a whole-of-government approach.

The experts will also explore the significance of migration, urbanization and cities for the follow-up to the relevant pillars of the global development agenda (i.e., Programme of Action from the International Conference on Population and Development, 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants and the New Urban Agenda).
