Navigating the Climate Crisis with Optimism and Innovation

10:55 - 11:05 EDT

If global greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase at the current rate, the warming of our planet will result in significant climate impacts, including increased frequency and intensity of heatwaves, changing precipitation patterns, and more severe droughts and floods.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau takes a positive and blue skies approach to climate solutions as focusing on "doomsday" scenarios can be overwhelming and paralyzing. Instead, he advocates for a more balanced approach that raises awareness and inspires action without instilling fear. Coster-Waldau's approach is rooted in optimism and the belief that humanity can overcome environmental crises by leveraging collective ingenuity and cooperation.

Speaker:

  • Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, UNDP Goodwill Ambassador

Moderator: Janelle Dumalaon, Deutsche Welle

In this conversation, we announce a new initiative to boost global healthcare. Accelerating Sustainable Development-SDG Progress Report Snapshot

11:25 - 11:35 EDT

With just six years remaining, the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2024 shows current progress falls far short of what is required to meet the SDGs. Without massive investment and scaled up action, the achievement of the SDGs — the blueprint for a more resilient and prosperous world and the roadmap out of current global crises — will remain elusive. We must act now, and act boldly. The discussion will cover where we are and what is needed to break through to a better future for all.

Speaker:

Moderator: Minlu Zhang, China Daily

Financing a Fairer Future

11:45-12:00 EDT

The SDG financing gap has grown to $4 trillion annually for developing countries, an increase of 56 percent since 2020. Debt servicing is crowding out critical development spending.

The lack of fiscal space to invest in social spending and the massive investments needed for developing countries to transform their energy and digital systems to move into the green and AI revolution, is a recipe for a growing and worrying divergence.

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. This session will highlight commitments made by global leaders, the practicalities of implementing these commitments, ongoing challenges, and innovative solutions already emerging.

Speakers:

  • Achim Steiner, Administrator, United Nations Development Programme
  • Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, Egypt

As low-Earth orbit becomes more crowded, major environmental problems grow: space-based hazards posed by probable increases in space junk and proliferation of mega constellations could interfere with scientific studies of the cosmos, dramatically boosting metallic pollution entering the stratosphere from the fiery reentry of spacecraft and debris and impacting global peace and security.
