Every year in July, the world comes together in New York to monitor progress in realising the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The conversation revolves around how each of the member states of the United Nations is achieving the common vision of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

For the world’s Most Vulnerable States, this is an opportunity to celebrate achievements, reflect on challenges and find solutions to accelerate the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.

Our office has taken part in the High-Level Political Forum, advocating for the needs and solutions of the Most Vulnerable States.

The world’s Most Vulnerable States face barriers in accessing concessional financing despite facing devasting and repeated shocks, such as extreme weather events and the pandemic. At the Oceans Conference in Lisbon in June, OHRLLS hosted a side event focusing on ocean partnerships and science-based solutions for strengthening sustainable ocean economies in SIDS, LDCs and LLDCs.

Speakers representing various vulnerable groups emphasised the importance of measuring vulnerability in a universal and equitable way. The international community will be better equipped to tackle vulnerability when there is a consensus on how to measure it.

Ahead of the 5th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (), OHRLLS is partnering with the Thomson Reuters Foundation on a training programme for journalists from the world’s 46 LDCs. This month, OHRLLS held a webinar to introduce LDC journalists to the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA) that was adopted in March this year. 

The webinar (click on the button below to watch) focused on the six priority areas of the DPoA and how the UN system supports LDCs in achieving the goals of the programme. It is imperative that LDC journalists are aware of the DPoA and its goals, as the media plays an important role in driving LDCs toward sustainable development.

We held a meeting of the SIDS Global Business Network to present on the role played by the private sector through partnerships to support the blue economy. Private sector partnerships are key in helping Small Island Developing States benefit from the growing blue economy.

Partnerships that were highlighted at the event included those on decarbonizing the shipping industry, revitalizing tourism and new initiatives to help island nations achieve 100% renewable energy.

SIDS face obstacles in accessing finance resources dedicated to Climate Action, despite confronting unique ecological and social challenges related to climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The level of climate funding currently available to SIDS is not proportional to their needs. To combat this, the Climate Finance Access Network (CFAN) recommends expanding mechanisms that provide direct funding to SIDS. A dedicated funding envelope for SIDS will facilitate access to climate funds and strengthen regional institutional capacities.
