In January 2023, the Office of Legal Affairs held, through its Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (Division), a four-day capacity-building workshop on the delineation of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles and the preparation of a submission to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (Commission). The workshop was hosted by the Government of Chile in Santiago de Chile. Chile’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ximena Fuentes, opened the workshop, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Antonia Urrejola, closed the workshop.
Thirty-three participants from 14 States of the region received training on the scientific and technical and legal aspects of delimiting the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles, and to prepare, maintain and present submissions to the Commission.
The course was delivered by two staff members of the Division and two subject matter experts.
This regional workshop was part of a series of workshops and technical assistance activities being delivered by the Division under the Strengthening the strategic capacity of developing States in ocean governance and the law of the sea for sustainable ocean economiesÌý project, which is funded by Norway.
